Work, work, work!

Whew! What a ride it’s been! It’s been a crazy past few months, with lots of work and little downtime, but, as I’ve learned, that’s when all the fun starts!!

At the beginning of January, January 7th to be exact, my family and I took a short little trip to the mighty Mississip! We had a wonderful visit in St. Louis, with lots of fun times! We visited the arch, and took some great pictures. We then went across the street to the Maritime Court Building, where we walked in to quite a party! The Missouri Park’s Department was hosting a “Twelfth Night Ball.” This French tradition has been kept for years and is a ball held twelve days after Christmas. With live folk music, people in 17th Century French costumes, and dancing, we had quite the time! I was able to dance with a local native that serves as a re-enactor. I also got meet with some sweet girls that were attending the ball as princesses. We had a great time experiencing St. Louis’s traditions!

When I got back from St. Louis, a new project began! Last February I established a fundraiser in ten schools for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital that raised aver $4,000. This was a fundraiser that I wanted to become an annual event, and so this year I led the schools in another fundraiser for St.  Jude. The challenge was to raise $1 for every student in the schools. This year, the schools raised over $3,000 for St. Jude. The radio-a-thon for St. Jude that is held at the same time as the fundraiser raised over $32,000!! It was a huge success and could not have been possible without the local support of schools, and without the hard work of the students the were in charge of the fundraisers in their individual schools.

The beginning of February was an exciting time for me! I was informed that I am the recipient of Prudential Spirit of Community Award’s Missouri’s top high school youth volunteer! This award comes because of the mentoring program that I have set up in my community to organize fundraisers, all together raising over $10,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Children’s Miracle Network. With this honor, also comes the great opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. in May. I will be meeting with other state recipients and talking with them about my program. Hopefully, I will be able to take this program national!! I also have been honored with the President’s Volunteer Service Award and a Resolution from the Missouri Senate recognizing my volunteerism.

Along with Prudential Spirit of Community, I have been honored by being named one of twelve Elks Teenager’s of the Month in my high school, as well as advancing to the state level in the Elks Most Valuable Student national competition. I’m looking to hearing back from more scholarships as the spring approaches!

I’m looking forward to spending some time in St. Louis this weekend! I haven’t seen my sister queens in a while and I’m ready to spend some time with them!

On a personal note, I will be a proud Aunt Kelby again in July!! And this time, it’s officially a little GIRL!! I can’t wait to meet my beautiful little niece!!!

God Bless!

Miss Gateway to the West 2012

End of One Year, Beginning of Another

What a busy end of the year it has been, but a very good one! 2012 has been a year marked in my book for years! This will be the year that I graduate high school, turn 18, and of course the year the world will end! Just kidding :) I hope that everyone was blessed with good holidays this year. I spent my holidays at my older brother’s house in Huntsville, Alabama, where most of the time I was chasing around my 19 month old nephew, Asa. It was great being around family that I rarely get to see, and I am proud to announce that I will again be an aunt this summer!! I can’t wait to meet this new little addition to our family!!

On another note, I was able to meet with my Gateway family on December 18th for quite a day! On December 17th, after celebrating the wonderful marriage of my previous sister queen- Jessica (Arl) Smith, Miss Osage River 2011-and also getting to spend some time with my Miss Missouri Little Sister, Moreah Arthur, my mom and I headed up to St. Louis. On the 18th, we attended a lovely church service at the McKnight Road Church of Christ (I definitely recommend it if any one is in the Brentwood/St. Louis area and looking for a church to attend!!!), we then went to meet with the Gateway Krewe for a short talent review. After that, we were off to the Magic house in St. Louis. There, I had a wonderful evening and an experiences that will stick with me forever. The Gateway Girls had been invited to attend the Children’s Miracle Network Miracle Families Holiday Party! At this party, the Cardinal-Glennon and St. Louis Children’s Hospitals named their new CMN Spokesfamilies for the year. These families appear at events, such as radio appearances and Wal-Mart Fundraisers for CMN, and tell their stories and how CMN has helped them. The new Spokesfamily for Cardinal-Glennon Hospital’s story centers around their 5 (And a half!) year old daughter, Camryn. Camryn is one of the most charismatic people I have ever met!! Even though she only has one functioning arm, she plays just like everyone else(If not even a little more!), and gives the biggest and sweetest hugs. Being around all of the previous and incoming CMN spokesfamilies was so inspiring. Although the Children’s Miracle Network has so many inspiring stories, being able to witness it’s impact first hand just puts an even larger emphasis on the importance of the program that Miss America has chosen to represent! You can see pictures below of Allison, Samantha, Tess, and me playing in the Magic House and meeting all these great kids and their parents!

Speaking of Miss America, Miss America 2012 will be crowned in just a few short weeks!! Our own Miss Missouri is headed off to Las Vegas this week! Let’s all say a prayer for her and cheer her on January 14th! My experience in competing has been friends and family asking if they can do something to help me! Well, you CAN help Sydney!!!!! Click on this site: http://www.missamerica.org/videocontest/  Scroll down until you find Miss Missouri’s video and then Vote, Vote, Vote!!! Voting closes January 12. You have until then to vote on every piece of technology you own, and thanks to Steve Jobs, most of us own more than one device that can access the internet!! The top two contestants with the most votes will automatically be in the Top 15! Let’s help Sydney get there!!

Coming up in the next few weeks, I have the high school musical, Cinderella, where I will be playing the Fairy Godmother! Also, I will be starting up the second annual Heart for St. Jude’s fundraiser! Hopefully we will be able to beat the previous record we set of $4,000 raised! More on that as it develops. Along with all of that excitement, I was notified a couple of weeks ago that I have been chosen as a one of the 2,200 semifinalists out of the nearly 84,000 applicants in the Coca-Cola Scholars Program! I will be entering my finalist paperwork over the next two weeks, and will receive news in early February. Prayers for all of these projects would be much appreciated over the next few weeks!!

I would like to leave you with a final quote that I found the other day:“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” ― Albert Einstein. Remember to allow others to be themselves in this New Year, and to be transformed of this world! Do not let anyone tell you that you cannot do something or make you feel inferior. I know many times I face persecution for the way that I live my life not conformed to society. Never let society make you feel unvaluable because of a service mindset or a belief in God, because everyone is a genius in their own way, and you are never alone. Well, that’s my little sermon for the day!;)

Thank you all for reading! May God bless you in this New Year!!

The blessing of a new year…

Around 9:45 on the night of Saturday October 15, I stood on the stage at De Smet High School in St. Louis, MO and had the pleasure of hearing the announcement, “And your new Miss Gateway to the West 2012 is… Kelby Czerwonka!” It felt surreal! I had fulfilled the first step of what has been a life-long dream for me. I had won a local title in the Miss America system. God blessed me so much with wonderful sister queens crowned alongside me and a fantastic board! Also crowned that night were Miss Gateway St. Louis 2012, Alison Hebron; Miss Gateway St. Louis’ Outstanding Teen 2012, Tess Mandoli; and Miss Gateway to the West’s Outstanding Teen 2012, Samantha Caraway. They all did so amazing!

The Miss America system has always held a special place in my heart due to its focus on style, service, scholarship, and success. Holding a title in this system is more than just words that come after your name or a shiny crown on your head, it is a job. It is a job to serve others, your community, your state, and your nation. Being able to use my title of Miss Gateway to the West 2012 in order to serve others is an honor for me and I cannot wait to get started!

With this title also comes the opportunity of competing for Miss Missouri 2012 in June  in Mexico, Missouri. I hope to be able to take my service to an even higher level with the title of Miss Missouri! Thank you all for taking this journey with me!

God Bless!

And your new Miss Lake of the Ozarks’ Outstanding Teen is…

On October 28th and 29th I got to experience something I had never had the chance to before-the end. After a phenomenal year as Miss Osage River’s Oustanding Teen 2011, it was time to crown a new title holder! I had a phenomenal weekend with my sister queens Malorie Howe, Jessica Arl, and McKensie Garber. From rushing out of rehearsal so we could catch the end of the Card’s game (Go World Series Champs!!!), to singing karaoke to songs we didn’t know, to standing on stage crying together as our final moments holding our titles, this was a weekend to remember! This really proved to me the forging of forever lasting friendships. Thank you to my amazing board, director, sister queens, parents, friends, and ultimately God for allowing this amazing experience.

There were so many amazing competitors this weekend. I would like to say a big congrats to Courtney Roe, Miss Lake of the Ozarks second runner-up; Darbi Fuhrman, Miss Lake of the Ozarks first runner-up; and finally Jeni Dixon, Miss Lake of the Ozarks 2012. Congratulations to Savannah Moore, Miss Lake of the Ozarks’ Outstanding Teen 2012. Also, a big congrats to Shade Bullock, first runner-up Miss Lake of the Ozarks OT, who is now Miss Boone County’s OT due to scheduling conflicts with the previous titleholder.

This year has been amazing. I could not have asked for a better one. God winks everyday and opens doors that I could not have found on my own. Thank you all for taking the journey with me!

God Bless!

My World Travels!

What a crazy three weeks it has been!!! It seems I have been traveling the nation this summer! I guess it is easiest to start at the beginning!

The first week of June, Mom and I headed to Mexico, MO, where I competed in the Miss Missouri’s Outstanding Teen Pageant. It was a tough week with a rigorous schedule: Early mornings, late nights, no lunch breaks (hope you brought a snack!!) and day long rehearsals. I competed in interview competition on Wednesday morning, evening gown/onstage question Wednesday night, and then talent and fitness on Thursday! At the preliminary show on Thursday, I was blessed to win the fitness wear preliminary award, as well as the “Change Bandit” award. This award is for the contestant who raises the most money for Children’s Miracle Network. Thanks to many people in the West Plains community and area schools, I was able to lead an effort to raise $3,000 for this worthy cause! I was also awarded for selling the most salute pages for the program book-thanks again to the community for that as well! On Friday night I was thrilled to hear my name called as a Top Ten finalist in the competition! I competed in all of the categories again, but there was some tough competition!! I did not end up advancing to the top five, however at the after party that night I received the award for Community Service and Preliminary Interview. I was also completely honored to be named Miss Congeniality by all of the other contestants!! All in all, it was a great week! Congratulations to our new Miss Missouri, Sydney Friar, and Miss Missouri’s Outstanding Teen, my sister queen, McKensie Garber! They will both represent our state very well! Also congratulations to my sister queen, Miss Osage River, Jessica Arl, for also making Top Ten!! Great Job Jess!!!!!!!:)

The next week it was off to Dallas for the National Speech and Debate Tournament, at which I competed in Student Congress. After 2 days and 12 hours of congressional debate sessions, I found out that I did not make the top 60. However, I did get elected Presiding Officer of my House of Representatives chamber. I then went on to compete in other events, Prose Reading and Poetry Reading. I was honored to make it to the top ten percent (45 students out of the original 450) in Prose Reading. Seeing as this was the top 1% in the nation, I was pleased with the results!Missouridid well as a state at Nationals, bringing home many trophies! It was great getting to meet so many great students from all over the nation!

I then attended Missouri Girls’ State at  the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, MO for a week. I learned so much and met so many great girls!!! We had over 744 in attendance, with 5 attending from West Plains. I ran for the House of Representatives, and once I received that honor, I ran and received the office of Speaker of the House. I got to do so many neat things in this role, but the coolest was debating on the actual house floor in Jefferson City! I also got to do some fun things, such as sing in the talent show and be my city’s Activity Director! We started out mostly strangers, and all left sisters. It was truly a life changing week, and one I will never ever forget!

Thank you for all of your support. These opportunities and experiences could not be possible without it!!

God Bless,

What Happens in Mexico…

WOW!!!! What a journey these past few months have taken me on!! As I prepare to leave for Mexico, Missouri and the Miss Missouri’s Outstanding Teen Pageant later today, I would like to tell you the story of why I am here and how I got here…

Ever since I was a little girl, I told my mom I want to be Miss America when I grow up. I was so obsessed with and focused on this dream that my peers and teachers even began to notice! My third grade teacher even gave out special awards at the awards assembly in elementary school, and I got the award of “Future Miss America!” As I grew older, and got more involved in my school, church, and community, this dream never left me. I would think about it in everything I did, checking up on the Miss America website at least once a month to keep up on the latest travels of the title holder that year(P.S. the background on that website is still the same to this day!!) I not only had all of the information of the current Miss America memorized and ready to be recited at the drop of a hat, but I had all of the rules memorized as well! I could not wait until I was finally old enough to compete!!

Fast forward a few years and I had landed a summer internship at a local radio station. Everyday, I would go in to the studio and see two autographed pictures staring back at me: One of Mary Bauer- Miss Missouri’s Outstanding Teen 2007, and the current Miss Jackson- and the other of Lindsay Casmaer, Miss Missouri 2007. The dream that never went away just kept getting bigger and bigger until one day, I walked in to the station and there sat Mary Bauer. I was shocked! She was in town visiting some friends and had stopped in for an interview-the norm for her! That day was the first day I really found out about the Miss Missouri’s Outstanding Teen pageant, and from there on, I couldn’t stop dreaming! By the end of the week, I had my evening gown ordered, a schedule of locals I could attend, a platform, and an appointment with my voice teacher to pick out a song for talent! I am a debater, which means I do a lot of research, and I put those skills to work! I found out everything I could about this new dream of mine!

On October 30, I was crowned Miss Osage River’s Outstanding Teen 2011 at the very first local I competed at. Although it was not the closest local to my home town-and not the funnest drive there!- my family had sat together and prayed together the night before I won. We prayed that if this is the place God wants us and God needs us, then let it be. If not, then we will go wherever he does need us. God blessed me by placing me with a great board of directors and sister queens and the wonderful Lake Ozark community! I truly know that it the best place for me, and God knew it too!

As I enter this week as Miss Osage River’s Outstanding Teen, I know at the end of the week two things could happen. I could come out Miss Missouri’s Outstanding Teen 2011, or come out Miss Osage River’s Outstanding Teen 2011. Either way, I know that I will be carrying out God’s plan in my life. I know that he needs me where he places me, he needs all of us where he places us.

“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 As I go throughout this week, and every week thereafter, I will be praying the following prayer, authored my the current Miss America, Teresa Scanlan:
Dear God, please help me to be a diligent servant not only today but from here on out. Give me the strength and wisdom to accurately handle your word of truth and the diligence and perseverance necessary to be a worker who is not ashamed. I wish to be a shining light for you, a glowing example of who you are, and a grain of salt in a tasteless world. Whether or not this is achieved through a position, crown, title, or job, please place me exactly where you need me to be an effective ambassador for you. I am clay in your hands, your humble servant, willing to do whatever you wish for me in your perfect plan. I love you so much and thank you for blessing me so tremendously and bestowing such outstanding opportunity on me. My greatest wish is to exemplify your love through my words and actions in order to bring others to you.
Your Loving Daughter, Kelby
I know that this is exactly where God wants me to be, and He has a plan for each and every day of my life, not only this year, but every year. If I win the title of Miss Missouri’s Outstanding Teen, I will know it is His will. If I do not win, and continue the next few months as Miss Osage River’s Outstanding Teen, I will know it is His will. How incredibly calming it is to know that my life is in His hands!
I know that this week will be wonderful, and I’m sure it will be one not to be forgotten! Although I am prepared for competition, I’m not ready to compete. Competition is not what this week is about. I wouldn’t be doing this if that’s all this was. What I am ready for is God to shine through in my life and show me what path I need to take, that is what this week is about. I am ready to be my best and beat myself in what I am doing, because that’s all that I need to be happy, just to know I did my best and the rest is in God’s hands! Why am I competing in the Miss Missouri’s Outstanding Teen competition over the next week? Because God has placed me in this position to show His love. Please pray that I might be able to accomplish this in whatever way he sees fit!
As Caressa Cameron, Miss America 2010, said, even losing in this organization is winning, because you serve your community, effect other’s lives, earn scholarships, make new friends, and become an overall better person in the long run just by vying for the title. This is advice is some of the best and is to be considered each day along this path!!
God bless you and please pray for me over the next few days as I try to let God shine through me, and, as my mom says every morning as I leave the house, “Make God Happy!” Thank you for your love, support, and prayers!
In Christian Love,
Kelby McKay Czerwonka

Popcorn and Root Beer Floats for Children’s Miracle Network!

Many different organizations are generous enough to team up with Children’s Miracle Network in order to raise money for this wonderful organization. Wal-Mart is one of those many organizations! At the Wal-Mart in my hometown of West Plains, Missouri, one of the ways they raise money for CMN is by selling popcorn, cotton candy, rootbeer floats, hot dogs, bratwurst, hamburgers, sodas, snow cones, and any other yummy summer foods you can think of to shoppers from early May to mid-June! My local Wal-Mart usually raises between $12,000 and $15,000 for Children’s Miracle Network a year, and I was blessed to be a part of that today! I sold popcorn and rootbeer floats to hungry Saturday shoppers at the front of the store this morning from 10 to noon! It was so fun to get to talk to so many people in the community about all the amazing things that Children’s Miracle Network does and about how the Miss Missouri and Miss Missouri’s Outstanding Teen Organizations help CMN. I once again was amazed by all of the generosity that the West Plains community has! I had a great time scooping popcorn this morning, raising funds and awareness for CMN, and promoting the Miss Missouri’s Outstanding Teen Program in my hometown!

God Bless!

Miracles in May for Children’s Miracle Network

On May 5, 2011, the challenge was officially issued through three local radio stations and the local newspaper in West Plains!! All of the area schools were challenged to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network, and what a great job they did! Whenever a student brought in a dollar, then they could decorate a paper CMN balloon! Businesses could also “sponsor” a class, allowing every student to get to decorate a balloon. Also, At each of the area K-8 rural schools, I designated a 7th or 8th grade leader to head up the effort in their school. It was a great experience to not only raise money for the cause of CMN, but also to develop the skills of these future leaders in our area and schools, and possibly future MMOT contestants!

Although all of the schools did very well in their fundraising efforts, one particular school stuck out. Howell Valley school raised $1,624.91 for CMN!! I was very proud of their work! The 7th grade leader at Howell Valley, Madison Cozort, did a great job heading up the effort and encouraging local businesses to sponsor a class. Madison and I were able to speak on three local radio stations this morning as a follow up in order to share the success of the fundraiser. Three Howell Valley classes also earned the awards offered for the fundraiser: The 1st grade raised the most money at the school that raised the most with $551.13 and a participation rate of 2,204%. After 1st grade was taken out of the equation, Howell Valley 7th grade raised the most with $176.00 and a participation rate of 800%. The Kindergarten won the highest participation rate after 1st grade with 934.1%. All of these classes were awarded with free Spring Dipper Ice Cream from a local ice cream shop!

It was absolutely awesome to go around to area schools and see the CMN balloons on the walls! School totals are as follows:

Howell Valley School: $1,624.91

Fairview School: $509.00

West Plains High School: $256.04

Glenwood School: $221.00

West Plains Elementary School: $161.10

West Plains Middle School: $124.75

Thayer School: $37.01

The overall total after some individual donations outside of schools comes to $3,000.00!!! West Plains is such a great  out reaching community that really is focused on helping others! It was great to see this fundraiser bring classes, schools, and the community together to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network! Thank you to everyone who gave and who helped!

God Bless!

Side note: On one of the stations that Madison and I spoke on this morning, the normal DJ was out of town. So, I was asked to step in and interview not only Madison, but also a few other people about some things going on around West Plains! It was fun to be on the other side of things again! It definitely gave me flashbacks to last summer, and it was so fun!

Peanuts, Cupcakes, and So Much More!

I hope you all had a fabulous Memorial Day weekend! As I’m sure many of you did, I spent mine at the lake…The Lake of the Ozarks, of course! On Friday I got the opportunity to promote the Lake Area Kiwanis Club with my sister queens, as well as promoting the Miss Missouri and Miss Missouri’s Outstanding Teen Organizations! We teamed up with Kiwanis Club members and partook in the annual “Kiwanis Peanut Day!” We stood at a very busy intersection in Lake Ozark and collected money for the Kiwanis Club. The different part about this was that we also handed out little bags of peanuts, whether the person decided to donate or not! The Kiwanis Peanut Day was created to raise funds for deprived children living in the Lake of the Ozarks local area. I was amazed how generous people were to donate anything they had to spare! From 25 cents to 10 dollars, every little bit helped! Several people asked about the Miss Missouri and Outstanding Teen Organizations, and I was honored to get to inform them about what we do and who we are! It was definitely a great experience to connect with the wonderful Lake Area community who give us so many opportunities to serve in their community and so much support!  I can’t thank them enough!

On Saturday, all of us “Lake Girls” had a little fun at the Miss Missouri and Outstanding Teen Send-Off Party that our marvelous board hosted for us! We had our final mock interview and then modeled all of our clothes, as well as performed our talents. Then, we headed out to the lobby for a mini-celebration, complete with cupcakes arranged in the shape of a crown!! I had so much fun relaxing a bit and getting to visit with the Lake Board and my wonderful sister queens! We also had a surprise guest, Miss Northeast Counties, Jenna Osseck! It was great to get to see Jenna again! Congratulations to all of these girls for making it this far and good luck in the coming week! Missouri would be honored to have any of you as Miss Missouri 2011!

Just six more days!!! God Bless,
